I personally own 2 8-strings. They're higher
end ones but Schecter and ibanez and even Washburn all sell some in the $500 range. Anything below that probably won't be worth it.

No problem, you've been a big help. The kid's autistic and music is one of the only things that he really seems to focus on that gives him any pleasure.

word of advice: if going with a schecter, don't get a damien series. the playability is terrible. i've bought two (both stupid moves) and ended up selling them for way less than i paid. josh's suggestions are good. hope the kid finds some enjoyment in it.
