According to a letter from the organizers of Australia’s Black Mass Festival, the event has been cancelled. The festival was planned for November 27 and was to feature Naxzul and Drowning The Light, but it seems that this has riled up some of the local Christian folk.
They’ve been trying to get the venue to cancel the show, pestering the venue and local ticket outlets. According to reports, “no group has put their hand up to reveal where they are from or who they are but have always stated that ‘we are offended.’” The story adds that Nazxul and Drowning the Light have received death threats along the lines of “if you play this show you will pay for it” and “you are as good as dead that night.”
But now, the organizers of the show claim in this letter posted on this forum that “We deeply regret to inform everyone that the Black Mass festival to be held on the November the 27th has been cancelled.”
The letter continues: “The turn of events that has unfolded in regards to the Black Mass festival has shocked us and filled us with disappointment, anger and sadness. Less than two weeks out from the show [the venue’s board] has pulled the plug on Black Mass Festival. They have blatantly cancelled with no prior notice and with no option of negotiation or compromise. They have sadly bowed under pressure from Christians who have lobbied them to cancel the show.
“The disappointment I feel is hard to even put into words, especially after so many reassurances from the venue about the show going ahead,” the letter continues. “It is of course a massive blow not just to us but especially to all of the bands performing who have dedicated time and money to play this show. We also realize that this is a great inconvenience for all ticket holders and attendees some of whom are coming from as far away as Tasmania, Perth and even New Zealand! This is what upsets me the most when I think about everything that has unfolded. The Christians have launched the full scale of their campaign at the last minute, I believe in a calculated manner to sabotage us to the fullest extent possible. They have done so via a series of Facebook pages organized to have the event cancelled.”
The letter adds that this same group lobbies against gay and lesbian rights and a woman’s right to choose. “What they don’t realize is that they not only hurt us, we will be hurt financially and have lost countless hours of work time. But they really hurt the people that can least afford it, the bands and fans. Their actions will cause large scale hurt not to a secret den of Satanists as they may imagine but to normal hard-working, tax-paying, law abiding Australians. Young people who have taken time off work, rearranged their schedules and family life, then spent money that they probably can’t afford on flights and tickets to the event in the pursuit of a shared love for heavy metal and live independent Australian music.
“What they also do not realize is that they equally hurt themselves in alienating all of us, their fanaticism only reenforces the atheist and non-Christian path already taken by many young people in the community. What they have undertaken is in fact harassment and a campaign of discrimination and hate against us.”
