So literally the only beer I ever want to drink is Guinness. Is there such thing as a poor mans version of Guinness - or is it a one of a kind type of thing? Newb question, I know - but I'm quite interested.

Try the other stuff with the widget in the can. boddingtons, murphys, etc.

I don't know what you mean by poor mans guinness... Perhaps try a stout that's cheaper?

Yingling black and tans are cost effective and delicious when they can be had.

Brew your own.

for the love of the beer gods, go to a liquor store with a large beer section and pick out any stout other than guinness off the shelf. even if you can find a cheaper one, it's got to be better than that brown watery foam. check out porters too.

young's and BBC comes to mind. i've seen Naragansett stouts (or a porter?) around also.

toggletoggle post by ARKTOUROS at Apr 26,2010 2:03pm
and what aril said. guinness is more like bland english pub beer (like boddington's) than a proper stout.

Otter Creek makes a good one, I believe.

Also, not sure if you get it east of NY, but Saranac just came out with a Stout that's supposed to be pretty tasty. Not sure if it's any less expensive though.

Also, I don't see it often, but Sierra Nevada has a stout that is really tasty.

I love Guiness myself, but there are def. some other excellent stouts out there.

Porters are also good, but they bring teh sick.

Can't abide that Farmhouse shit. Tastes like can.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Apr 26,2010 2:14pm
I don't know ark. I love Guinness. Always have. I love all stouts but I'll crave a Guinness every now and then.
It's also has a 80+ rating on rate beer, which is pretty high.
I can see why you'd say it's watery foam.. In comparison to others.

Youngs double chocolate stout ist krieg too.

There are plenty of other beers for you to try. If you've never puckered up to a porter, you're really missing out on flavor country. Plus, they are generally cheaper than stouts. With beer, (and anything for that matter) you get what you pay for.

My current fav beer in bigger than lifesize fashion: Cost $1.65 for a big boy. Call me a fucking commie, I don't care.

toggletoggle post by ARKTOUROS at Apr 26,2010 2:16pm
^yeah, seriously, that beer is a whole meal for under $2

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Apr 26,2010 2:18pm
Flavor Country Beers :

anything from Southern Tier (particularly their Jahva and Chocolate stouts)

Yeti Cask Aged Stout

Old Rasputin (a hoppier more brutal stout)

and about 50 others I can't think of right now.

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Apr 26,2010 2:20pm
Another price to performance ratio winner is: $2.65

I shit bricks every time I drink this fucker. Smooth, tasty, notes of warm hearthy grandmother baked bread and banana and you drink 4 and you are fucked.

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Apr 26,2010 2:21pm
fuck, I guess I need a beer.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Apr 26,2010 2:29pm
I should just take a pic of my shelves of beer

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Apr 26,2010 2:31pm
I love Old Rasputin, but that is in no way a poor man's anything

toggletoggle post by ark at Apr 26,2010 2:33pm
well...it is when you only need 3 vs. clear-cutting an 18 pack.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Apr 26,2010 2:33pm
Guinness is a poor man's stout, if anything.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Apr 26,2010 2:34pm
Or at least a without-transportation-to-a-decent-liquor-store man's stout.

By "poor man's Guinness" I was referring to a cheaper version. I am aware of other kinds but I was just kind of wondering if there was a cheap version that tastes like pretty damn close. Thanks for everyones input here too - I'll have to try these for sure.

Do they even sell Yuengling anywhere north of Pennsylvania? I've had this beer before and other Yuengling brews and enjoy them.

I concur with the veracity of this statement and photo!

Yeti & Southern Tier are delicious.

Beer, like tanks, does not exist yet.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Apr 26,2010 6:35pm
Though I enjoy a Guinness or some fancy heavy brew here and there, I much prefer something I can drink fast and a lot of. Off the tap, I drink Stella, at home, Amstel Light (cans only). Alcoholism FTW.

I agree with that, lately I've been a Sam Adams guy myself.
