do their songs flow yet or do they bounce around styles and genres still? I honestly have not heard much after their first album. I guess I'm a newb with these bands.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 22,2009 9:33pm
i only have 4 tracks of this.

toggletoggle post by spaldino at Oct 22,2009 9:34pm

THIS BAND SOUNDS SO FRESH AND EXCITING, OH WAIT NO THEY DON'T

toggletoggle post by spaldino at Oct 22,2009 9:37pm
haha, amazing

Got it yesterday and listened to it twice today. First song is pretty cool and there are a few cool parts throughout the album but it's not very good over all. There's too much extraneous shredding and leadwork and not enough riffage to back it up. They sound more like Dream Theater than they ever did.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 22,2009 9:45pm
Hence why they tour with Dream Theater.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Oct 22,2009 9:45pm
Speaking of which, the new Dream Theater is the best album they've done in over a decade. Just do yourself a favor and listen to the instrumental version of the album - Labrie is shit as always.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 22,2009 9:46pm
I have this band's discography on my computer but I only ever listen to the beginning and end of Selkies.

Uh, Six Degrees of Turbulence RULES and I really like Train of Thought because it was my first introduction to more-technical-than-metallica music.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Oct 22,2009 9:49pm
I heart the second and third album. I didn't go too nuts over the self-titled, and Colors bored the shit out of me. (although the live DVD is pretty cool)

Liquid Tension Experiment or bust. Either way, I'm sick of listening to the DT boys show their skills off. Made a trollthread about that a few months ago.

AWAKE is their best. 6 O'Clock on a Christmas Mornin'.

I agree on both points. And I say it again, new stuff is BETTER. Best album, to me, since AWAKE.

Again, if you like AWAKE try new album. If you think James Labrie is a fag (as you should) PLEASE get instrumental version FIRST.

Wait, what album are you talking about here? The one with the Opeth Rip-off song?
Like I said, I stopped caring about DT so I'm not hugely familiar with any of their releases since 2000ish.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Oct 22,2009 9:52pm
To elaborate, not only does Labrie suck in his normal semi-tolerable way, but also it seems the Petrucci and Portnoy still keep thinking they're some kinda badass rappers. SO FUCKING ANNOYING!

To you I was referring to the new DT album, Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

Is the album elite?

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 22,2009 9:54pm edited Oct 22,2009 9:55pm
Awake is one of my least favorite of their albums. There are too many things I dislike about it for me to list but to me it feels disjointed and every song outside of Erotomania leaves me wanting more. But, of course, my disdain for Awake may be the fact that it was only the third or fourth DT album I listened to.

Anyway, I don't listen to DT much anymore and the only song I could really stomach on their new one was The Count of Tuscany and those lyrics (written by Petrucci) are fucking juvenile. A retarded chimpanzee could have beaten a toddler senseless and then the toddler could have written those lyrics. No offense to any retarded chimpanzees or toddlers in the room.

I will check out the instrumental version. My friend that lives below me is obsessed with DT, I'll check it out.
I've held the opinion that DT doesn't have any soul in their music, but I know most disagree. It varies from song to song, really.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Oct 22,2009 9:58pm
Count of Tuscany is by far my favorite. Musically, it's genius. Vocally, it's one of Labrie's best performances, and one of Petrucci's WORST. "Let me introduce...my brother...rappity rappity rap rap"

The lyrics sound pretty gay, but I haven't really paid a ton of attention to them. The part at the end where Labrie sings "Wait a minute man, this isn't how it ends, etc..." gives me freaking chills. It's the only song where I actually prefer the lyrical version.

As for Awake, it's a matter of perspective and age. I can see how awesome and groundbreaking Awake was in the context of 20 years ago the same way I can appreciate how hot your mom is, in the context of 20 years ago.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 22,2009 9:59pm
Awake was released in 1994? Is it really 2014? Shit, I'm retarded.

From almost everything you say about music, you just don't tend to like structured and classical music like this. It's not that it has no 'soul', it's just not your kind of soul. I'm not retarded, by any means. If the music can give me chills, there is something there. It doesn't mean you have to like it. That's why the variety in metal is so amazing.

I'm stoned, I rounded up. Martins' mom isn't hot either, it was just an example dammit.

Ya my mom is ugly.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Oct 22,2009 10:05pm
I listen to classical music all the time.
When it comes to bands like DT and Symphony X, I can only take it in small doses. Same thing with power metal, which I know you love. I don't HATE it, I just think certain bands use too much theory which in turn takes emotions out of music. Not every DT song is like that to me, but when you've got virtuosos playing their instruments, they're bound to show off their skills and understanding of music theory.
Over the years I've developed more of a liking towards ambient/atmosphere based music rather than overly technical stuff. When I'm craving technical stuff, I'll throw in my 60s and 70s prog collection; which has recently trumped my liking for more recent metal bands.

Somehow my eyes skipped right through your entire last post and landed directly on "Herbs and Beer". That sounds like a truly wonderful idea.
