hey,
that is my guitarist's side band. just because they aren't metal doesn't mean they suck. they are a completely different style of music, and don't make any claims to be metal. have an open mind. i saw them live once and thought they put on a good show. they've played shows with some big goth/deathrock bands. i don't listen to their music, it's not my style and i'm not into theatrics, but i still think they are good at what they are doing. the bassist/vocalist writes most of the music, and it's hard to deny that his bass playing is really good. give it another listen and try to say that he isn't an excellent bass player. i'm not really into his vocals, but i think his voice is strong and fits the music. basically my point is, even though i'm not a fan of their sound and image, i can't deny that they have talent. so many metal fans claim to have an open mind about music, but alot of them seem to only have an open mind about different metal subgenres, rather than music as a whole.

at least someone realizes they are original. i'd take malice in leatherland over half the generic metal bands out there that play old tired styles. at least these guys have their own sound. people on this board may not like it, but it's original.

Your mental ineptitude is showing in that you can't even use the correct form of "I'm" and "Just". when did you go over that in school? like 3rd grade?

quick typos that i didnt feel like editing, shit stain. its not quite the same as using "your" inplace of "you're"... you could have even not used the apostrophe and it still would have been more correct than "your". and, im sorry... but if you want to try and be Mr. English Professor than you should have said "just" iinstead of "Just" seeing as that my instance of the word wasnt used at the beginning of a sentence and isnt a proper noun. so, sorry, you lose yet again.

Good one spaldy. I think my taste in music is pretty diverse as well. I would be willing to bet it's about as diverse as yours. Let me know some of the other stuff you listen to, maybe we could trade cd's or something, just no rapcore, or new-metal please.

toggletoggle post by TheGreatSpaldino   at Apr 2,2004 12:31pm
i dont mind GOOD rapcore and decent nu-metal. like, i can listen to Eastcide's first album and whatnot... and older Irepress was really good.

toggletoggle post by morkul  at Apr 2,2004 12:42pm
I am talking about other kinds of music too. Do you like Jazz, or latin, or other crazy shit. Sometimes I get inspiration from the weirdest shit.

toggletoggle post by morkul  at Apr 2,2004 12:43pm
What kind of Nu-Metal do you like?

toggletoggle post by TheGreatSpaldino   at Apr 2,2004 12:53pm
Jazz is the most technical form of music out there. jazz, ambient, classic rock, oldies, gregorian monk chanting, classical, video game music, trip hop, rap, new age, soundscapes, some 80's pop, space rock, progressive, metal (every genre i can pretty much think of), "anti-music" (occasionally), i dont know what you would call Autumn Tears or Dargaard... (piano and female vocals that is medieval sounding), some fusion, a little funk, primus, i dont know... a jumbled mess of other things too... categorizing some of these groups is a hard thing to do.

Slipknot isnt bad, the first Static X album, i can tolerate Mudvayne,... stuff along those lines.

toggletoggle post by morkul  at Apr 2,2004 1:02pm
I like the first Slipknot alot better than "Iowa". The first Static X is awesome to listen to when you need to switch things up a bit. I love jazz with a passion though.Tibetan Monk chanting I got into a couple of years ago. We actually put it on our cd when it came out. Rap though I'm going to say Old School Rap is way better than this bling, bling shit. NWA,House Of Pain, Cypress Hill,Wu-Tang Clan,Ghetto boys,DMX. That's about as much as I can take, although Outkast is doing some pretty great things with their style. I think it's going to open up alot doors down the road.

hell ya to NWA! and i love outcast, some of the newer underground rap is pretty good like atmosphere and mr.lif

wow, there are people on here who actually like good rap. i am impressed. i was listening to gregorian chant at my guitarist's house last night. good to see some people on this board who have diverse tastes and open minds. this thread has opened all kinds of cans of worms. mudvayne fans too. i thought i was the only person who looked at mudvayne more as a progressive band with quality musicianship than a nu-metal band. i wrote them off at first, but once i actually listened to them, i was impressed. if only more people on this board listened to good indie rock, like the black heart procession. that band rules.

I have a friend that makes some pretty cool rap. who here like The Roots?

toggletoggle post by morkul  at Apr 2,2004 3:17pm
The Roots earlier stuff I liked just for being creative. KRS-ONE,he used to have some good ryhms. The Goats were awesome,my wife can't stand it but they had comic polictical skits in-between songs. The first Gravediggaz was pretty tight as well. Has anyone here ever listened to John Zorn's Painkiller cd with Mick Harris from Napalm Death on drums and Steve Smith on bass I think and Zorn on the sax. Wicked crazy stuff...

all this jazz talk and not one MILES DAVIS reference :(

And I doubt Spalding has the most diverse musical tastes on this board.

im all for Jazz compilations... there isnt really any bad jazz so how can you go wrong for spending 2-7 bucks for an hour+ of good music?

i wish my computer never crashed... i would have like 10k mp3's then you could see a very good chunk of what i like to listen to.

all i have to say is "Chasin the Trane"

god damn right.

and Django Reinhardt is the one of the greatest guitarists ever, in any genre. the guy had 2 working fingers on his fret hand and still played circles around most guitarists then and now.

motorhead isnt punk, theyre more thrash but people do call it punk sometimes- either way theyre fucking great

dont forget the misfits, clit 45, poxy, filth, aus rotten, attak, blanks 77, august spies, black flag, chaos uk, GBH, combat 84, gorilla biscuits...

too many to name...

dont forget the band Television, probably the earliest punk rockers there were- way before the ramones/sex pistols that everyone always says started punk rock

I'm something of a 'music snob' and have even been titled 'musically racist' so I'm going to avoid getting in depth about this topic to avoid any death threats.
As far as jazz goes: musically I'm all for it minus the vocals. Although I think Funk is in an entire level above it.
Numetal: Slipknot is unexcusable. They aply to children who's parents do not love them so they die thier hair, cut themselves, wear pants with zippers and chains hanging from them and makeup for obvius attention purposes. It drives me out of my mind because if someone didn't want me to notice the chains suspended from thier pants, they wouldn't have spent 60$ on them at hot topic. So as far as I'm concerned Numetal is more a trend and fashion statement than form of music. I can stand relative ash and very little mudvayne, and Flaw, but nothing other than that.
I agree with spalding that every music ghas it's ups and downs, but I'm going to haveto add punk, ska, and Mike Cocliatis to the list of exceptions.

toggletoggle post by intricateprocess   at Apr 4,2004 9:57pm

gorilla biscuits isnt punk either. there hardcore.

toggletoggle post by Bastard at Apr 4,2004 10:30pm
Dimmybag. I didnt say Motorhead is punk, I said that after my first statement about punk. Motorhead is Motorhead, dont classify them under nothin, there way to intense for anyone to give them a title. To many fat chicks on the net, but its good sometimes.

The Roots kick ass, as does John Zorn. Underground hiphop is great, it's too bad the genre gets discarded on the basis of stygma alone.
Also - Thanks for the trashing, guys! It's odd to get this type of ribbing from the metal scene, seeing that I spent so much of my formative years listening to Candlemass and George Clinton.
You can't please them all, but I'd hope you'd give at least "A Happy Death Now" a listen before you begin throwing dead cats at us. We switched from Soundclick to another server

the Ramones own my soul... but as far as punk being the basis of which all the music we listen to today (metal). now thats pretty ridiculous and a false claim. everyone knows that Black Sabbath were the metal pioneers. punk gave birth to hardcore. Black Sabbath = metal, The Ramones = hardcore.

toggletoggle post by MaliceInLeatherland   at Apr 5,2004 10:04am
I'm really into TSOL, Samhain, Christian Death (early years), 45Grave and The Cramps. Bassically the punk that crossed into Deathrock territory. I do believe 'raw' blackmetal is a direct result of the effect punk had on metal in the 80s via Slayer.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Apr 5,2004 11:10am
i agree with both of the last two posts. i grew up listening to sabbath, and totally bypassed punk for sabbath influenced metal. punk had alot of influence on thrash, but i think sabbath definitely made the most impact on metal as a whole. i agree with black metal being partly a descendant of punk, especially the attitude.
