Portsmouth was recently honored with another high accolade, this one being named to the 'Top 20 Best Towns in America' by Outside Magazine. This honor was given based on criteria used to determine the best places in the country that provide 'the greatest opportunities for living the good life'.

The top 10 of the 'Top 20 Best Towns' in America:

1. Washington, D.C.
2. Chattanooga, Tenn.
3. Ogden, Utah
4. Portsmouth, N.H.
5. Tacoma, Wash.
6. Ithaca, N.Y.
7. Louisville, Ky.
8. Eureka, Calif.
9. Crested Butte, Colo.
10. Columbia, Mo.

Our fair city has received other recognition honors recently - Portsmouth was named the 'most walkable city' in New Hampshire by Prevention Magazine. The Portsmouth NH area, Rockingham and Strafford Counties, was also ranked as the second safest matropolitan area according California-based Farmer's Insurance Companies. Money Magazine had repeatedly named Portsmouth NH as 'one of the top best places to live in America' as well.

you're thinking of the worst towns list...

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Jan 5,2009 1:43pm
DC? that list is flawed.

toggletoggle post by Pires at Jan 5,2009 1:50pm
doesn't DC have a horrible murder rate?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Jan 5,2009 1:51pm
DC is like hell in some places and is beautiful in other places.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 5,2009 3:17pm
i'm sure Ogden Utah is a wonderful place to live. though i wouldn't mind living in a place called Crested Butte.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 5,2009 3:18pm
Crusted Butt would be better.

Louisville Kentucky?? Screw that! That is where the Uneeda medical supply company is! There are zombies everywhere there, and they run!

How did he survive the onslaught of running zombies?

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Jan 5,2009 3:56pm
he's big and zombies fear him

Portsmouth is "most walkable"? Is that because it takes 3 minutes to walk from 1 side of downtown to the other?

That's cool that a NH town made it -- but Portsmouth real estate for the most part is pretty much unobtainable unless you either have much $ or want to commit to a massive mortgage.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jan 5,2009 4:33pm
fuck that. manchester is better than portsmouth.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Jan 5,2009 4:35pm
I'm surprised Portland, OR isn't there. That's on like every list of awesome towns ever cause of all the green living and douchey coffee shops.

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Jan 5,2009 4:36pm
Pam has never actually been to Portland, OR I'm guessing.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jan 5,2009 4:46pm
Portland looks nice on the outside.. but there's heroin oozing out of the walls upon closer inspection.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Jan 5,2009 4:50pm
A friend of mine just moved out to Portland -- they have been getting crushed with unprecedented snow storms (apparently it never snows there) and other fucked up weather.

He did say there's a shit ton of annoying hipster fags there -- so all you scene kids would love it (haha).

Ya..."Money magazine" ranked Portsmouth well because it's filled with yuppies and hipsters. That town is merely a Massachussetts and New York suburb.

I work in Portsmouth and hate the snobby fucktard attitude of the assholes that payed $600,000 for a 1200 square foot condo on State St. They act like everyone else in the world is 2nd rate. Not to mention that every license plate in Portsmouth reads either Mass or New York. Unfortunately...Portsmouth is no longer NH. I grew up there and now I live in Maine because I can't afford to live where I grew up because it's filled with scumbags from everywhere BUT NH. Too bad...it used to be a really nice fishing town when I was growing up. Nice and quiet.

lol. 8% income tax and 5% sales tax. plus, MAINE WAS PART OF MASS. ya mook.

Maine is the best New England state, hands down. The best thing about it is the crazy loggers in mid-to-northern maine who don't know anything about anything but cutting wood and killing people

toggletoggle post by grizloch   at Jan 5,2009 6:05pm
ithaca? why?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 5,2009 6:17pm
aril, those same people live in northern nh, but don't pay 8% income tax on the money they get from logging or 5% sales tax on everything else. plus, liquors much cheaper. live free or die.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Jan 5,2009 6:56pm
READ...a few different magazines voted Portsmouth..yes it's awesome that a NH town was voted. Aaron and I own here and we are not yuppies nor hipsters.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 5,2009 7:04pm
idk.. from wiki:
The term yuppie (short for "young urban professional" or "young upwardly-mobile professional")[1] refers to an 1980s and early 1990s term for financially secure, upper-middle class young people in their 20s and early 30s looking to advance socially and economically[2]

put the word "white" in there and that describes every person in this thread. even the pieces of feces.

I don't understand how Rochester, NH did not make this list...We are talking about Contemporary Shithole Magazine's list, right?

if they put DC on the list then nothing should have stopped them from putting detroit on the list.

toggletoggle post by ctB0rderpatrol at Jan 6,2009 3:02am
washington DC is technically not in the united states. its a city-state kinda like vatican city. it automatically doesnt count

Disagree. Maine is a cool state, but no hunting on Sundays = EPIC FAIL.

That is the one thing in this thread that I wholeheartedly agree upon. It pisses me off to no end.

They forgot Austin, TX. Or maybe not.
