out of curiosity though, what is your reasoning?

I know I think that it sounds gross/abnormal in society today, even though it's fairly natural to drink milk out of a human boob as a child...but if if the ice cream tasted the same, why is it such a retarded idea?

if i may,
It's not a totally retarded idea, although i can see some faults in it. Firstly, i can totally understand the not eating meat thing, (although i eat it all the time) and i can 100% understand that the conditionions that cows are kept in to get milk are terrible, and i would totally understand if Peta was just pushing for that to stop. But cows need to be milked or they get very uncomfortable. I have been assured by coworkers who grew up on farms (after i read this i went around the office) that the cows need to be milked, and they acctually appreciate it and show affection to the milker a lot of the time. I also understand that idealistically they would only be milked by little baby cows, but if the cows are kept in great conditions, whats the harm in milking them? (besides the fact that their milk is not good for most people)

Now people milk, i don't think it's a bad idea in it of itself, i just think trying to force ben and jerrys to switch totally to human milk is crazy. Think of the amount of women who would have to line up everyday to produce enough milk. It would be so costly, and there would be such a smaller amound available, that B&Js would have to charge a mint for ice cream, and it wouldn't sell anywhere near as well as with cow milk. Basically, if B&Js did switch, they would probably go out of business. Peta is asking them to do that. Thats why i think its crazy, not because there would be anything wrong with human milk icecream, i would definitely eat it. I love boobies. I just think if Peta is so serious they should focus on things that could actually happen, like asking B&Js to use artificial milk so no cows had to be kept in captivity for them, or asking them to only use milk from farms where conditions where much better for the cows. But i think we all know how much money B&Js would lose from this change.

So all in all, the idea of the milk isnt that nuts, but the idea of Peta trying to get B&Js to use only human milk is a little bit nuts. But then again so is firebombing places where they do animal testing. Killing people & animals because people are being mean to animals. Sounds crazy to me.

***reminds me of a funny Bill Hicks bit about pro-lifers killing abortion clinic doctors. "it's irony at it's base level, but it's a hoot."

yeah, I called it retarded not because, "ew, gross boob milk" but because I can't believe they would expect people to not see through the, "yeah you guys should shut down" message it was actually sending. There's no way you could produce enough human milk to actually maintain their inventory.

It is basically just asking them to shut down because they think it's a subjugation of animals issue. Fine, fine. Just say that though. If they're trying to make people think and win hearts and minds it's going to just make the average person think, "That's ridiculous. Fucking PETA."

PETA's main tactic in a lot of these stunts is to use shock value to get people to think twice about what they are doing/wearing. And right now it's working because of this discussion. I don't think they ever expected Ben & Jerry's to stop using cow's milk. Asking them to use non-factory farming dairy suppliers is a more realistic request.

For the sake of debate, it also takes a lot of vegetables and grains to raise a calf to adulthood and then consume its meat or milk. it would be more efficient instead to consume those vegetable and grains directly instead of breeding those animals. Factory farming also produces tons of animal waste which pollutes the environment. Not to mention the acres and acres of rainforest cut down to raise cattle for meat consumption, mainly to import to the U.S.

Thats great, I'm glad you've read an Earth First pamphlet.
But, those grains usually come from the same areas as those forementioned rainforests to supply the needs of the farmers. Ofcourse, your speaking of South America where yes, alot of (if not most) meat from major distributors and chain restaurants get their product. But, if America stopped eating meat today I believe it would change very little. These folks that outsource our economic stability and import crap from nations with no value for human suffering, animal or environmental will just corner the Fruit and Vegetable market tenfold thus creating more deforestation, pollution you name it. It's a lose lose situation.
Do some homework and tell me with "facts" that a Macrobiotic society in America would help create less human suffering and environmental impact on the rest of the world. Rememer, you have to figure out how to solve this problem this within the margins of United States economic and agricultural laws and policies...Not unrealistic idealism.

This is more of an issue of bad politics. But see, PETA people are afraid to roll up their sleeves and get down to the real problems that plague Animals the Environment and Humans alike. PETA is like "Subversion Lite" for yuppies and actors.

Best thing to do is just be Apolitical,Eat Meat and Don't Read Books. If everyone did that. Nobody would look like an asshole in an others eyes and then the whole world will just sleepwalk into oblivion.

As a vegetarian I'd say PETA are pretty ineffectual. The ALF and Defenders of Wildlife get my support. Most meat-eaters like a good steak but they don't want to know how it got on their plate? Indeed the natural order of the animal kingdom is predator vs prey, but to make a point, I don't see bears, lions, or livestock chasing me down the street for their next meal.
It's one thing to hunt for your food and use every part of the animal like the Native American's did, but factory farms are complete bullshit. Animals living in sordid conditions, suffering abuse, and bred for one purpose: Slaughter. There's something wrong with that.
Something like 20 billion factory farmed slaughter animals consume about 40% of the worldwide grain harvest. Highly nutritious plant foods that are necessary for the human diet get exported from poor nations and used as animal feed.
I'm never one preach or convince anyone to convert to vegan/vegetarianism, but those who would attack others for their personal choices with insults such as "hippies" or "faggots" can fuck off.

Yup, like I said, PETA is stupid and from what I've experienced, they're not as dedicated to their cause as they claim. PETA are viewed as the leaders of the animal rights movement simply because they're the most widely known organization supporting this cause. The ALF takes action while PETA just stages stunts and photo-op's. Many vegetarians and vegans I know feel the same way.

For example, PETA's website has these voting polls and ridiculous contests like "Vote for the sexiest vegetarian celebrity!". Why the fuck would I care about anything like that? I thought this was about advocating for animal rights? Not catering to pop culture stupidity.

ps. farmland(whether for live stock or crops) destroys habitats and small ecosystems consisting of mice, hawks, snakes, and a variety of arthopods. No matter what were still killing animals/making their lives difficult.

toggletoggle post by Mikeofdecrepitude at Sep 26,2008 10:26am
That's also correct. Another argument against vegetarianism is that plants are alive too, so we shouldn't eat them. I guess it's all one big catch 22. Basically no matter what we do, it's screwing up something, but a factory farm is still far worse than a local one.
