Best show on television. Hands down. I've watched it beginning to end probably 4 or 5 times. First season's a little slow. If you liked 1st season a lot, then you're in for a treat with the rest of them.
There was another (several) wire thread on this board where I was using microsoft local.live (like google maps but better) to find all the actual locations on the show.
i'm really starting to think this is the most overhyped tv show of all-time. i've watched the first 7 episodes of season 1 and it has been pretty boring so far. the only parts i like are when the gangstas say funny shit. one of my coworkers is having a hard time getting into it too. my boss said it gets a lot better in season 2. i sure fucking hope so. i've seen parts of later episodes and liked it, so i have some hope for the show.
Ken: Season 1 is slooooooooooooow. It starts to get REALLY fucking good towards the end. Then the other seasons are gold. Still best show on TV.
Backed...season 1 is slow-er than the rest, mostly because there's a whole shit ton of plot and character development. One of the other seasons (3 maybe?) started like that too.
Yeah the boring plot development is so worth it though. It really sets it up for you to know the characters and give a shit about them. Watching this series from beginning to end is great too, because the characters really fucking go a long ways from where they started. The show has a lot of re-watch value too. The boring shit in season 1 is more interesting to watch the second time around I've noticed.
i've had a hard time actually giving a shit about the characters, but i'm starting to. i was attached to the characters in the shield from the get-go, but it's taking a while for me to warm up to the wire's characters. unlike the shield, i like the criminals more than the cops, but then again, that line is blurred in the shield anyway.i feel more compassion for characters like d'angelo barksdale and wallace than i do for mcnulty and the cops. the gangsters are way more interesting.
They definitely are in the beginning, I agree. You start to start caring about the cops too after awhile though. Such a fucking epic show.
Also, Ken.. season 2 has very little to do with drugs & the drugdealers. This sounds like bullshit but they introduce a whole new set of "bad guys" to go after, but it's one of the best seasons. I have no idea how this show managed to make this move and not ruin itself, but it pulled it off. Season 3 and on focuses more back on drugs. Then the following seasons after that focus on schools and then politics. Every season has a theme.
But far better in my opinion. I like The Shield too, but they're 2 totally different flavors. The Shield is ridiculously far fetched and just action oriented. It moves a lot faster. The Wire is a lot slower, but when there's action, you jizz your pants. The Wire is pretty true to life and accurate too (which is pretty fucking scary).
the shield is my favorite show ever, but the wire is definitely more realistic. the shield has more action than real life and the wire has a lot of slow parts like real life. 2 completely different shows, but both have their strengths. i'm starting to appreciate the wire after getting over my initial impatience with it.
I had the same feeling dreadkill did, but I didn't go on....the first 6-7 episodes just didn't hold my attention, but I'm gonna try again eventually
in response c.dead's post from July, The Shield is the best show ever made, period
the shield is the best show ever made in my opinion too. definitely give the wire another shot though. it's really starting to pick up.
I'm glad it's picking up for you. The end of season 1 is awesome. And once you start season 2, you will be hooked just like wallas be fiendin' on dat shyt.
Watching The Wire and playing GTA:San Andreas schooled me in ghetto speak. Yall be on watchin dat shyt for lil time an you be tawkin lyke yall ghetto ass niggas in no time too, ya heard?

while story is very important to any show, it's hard to get into something (at least for me) when a whole starts off with most or all story
an example of this is (and this might be annoying that The Shield and The Wire are being compared to each other constantly, even though as most people who've seen both series say, they're two completely different shows) Season 6 of The Shield was pretty slow by that show's standards, but I still thought it was good because I knew they were going for, and I had confidence in their writers giving some sort of pay off (which they did in Season 7)...maybe if I had got past where I got in The Wire, I would appreciate the beginning of the series more...I just couldn't see where it all was leading to
Yeah, that's one thing I don't understand about The Wire. I was kind of forced to watch the whole beginning of the series. I actually remember falling asleep for some of it. Could be a fuck up on the writers' part. In the beginning the show definitely doesn't hold your attention. Honestly, if I wasn't coaxed into sticking with it, I don't know if I'd have ever become a fan and watched the rest of the series.
I honestly fell in love the first time I watched it. I remember b-ri_DC had it, and we all watched it for hours before I realized I had to get to sleep so I could work in the morning. Those fuckers kept on truckin' though.
I thought seasons 1-3 were brilliantly written. It's challenging and a different kind of TV, but I guess I just prefer a story driven style. I can see why it would frustrate a lot of people.

I agree, I thought from the get-go it was brilliant, and quite refreshing from the usual ploys series' use to hold attention.
Yeah. I was changing planes on my way to Phoenix. All the black folk in Baltimore were talking like on The Wire and now I want to start watching it again when I get back.
Also, all the black women in Baltimore all have forearm tattoos.
I finally finished season 5 over the weekend. definitely one of the best shows ever. I still like the shield more, but as mike said before, they are different. the only thing they have in common is that they're both cop shows. season 4 was my favorite. i like how realistically unpredictable it is. i'm sad about what happened to dukie at the end. he was one of my favorite characters.
For those witb directv and that don't own the DVDs, the "101" network just started the wire from start to finish (weekly). It's uncensored too. DVRing this bitch and loving it yet again. Today was the first episode, so none of y'all missed a thing.
I'm on seasons three now. This show has rocked my world. I totally agree about the show being slow for a few episodes but it really picks up. This show is awesome on so many levels.
Just finished season 4. I love how they are able to flawless change the focus of the show over a season. watching 5 next week. I'm buying the boxset of this when I get a chance and want to rewatch on non-shit quality.
Just started rewatching this. This show has such cool rewatch value. Once you understand the characters better later on in the show it's fun to watch them in the beginning when you knew next to nothing about them. Not to mention to see where they started after you know where they end up.
*Opening scene. Brandon is stretched out on a car hood dead, bloody, missing/burned out eye, brutally tortured. Camera cuts to 2 uniform cops standing over the scene waiting for detectives & lab techs*
Uniform officer: "This is the worst suicide I've ever seen".
just finished season 5 moments ago. i didn't want to look in this thread til I was finished....
i never really watch tv shows and this was easily the greatest one I've ever seen. superb character development. fucking hours and hours of unforgettable television.
season 1 - fucking stellar, i thought the pilot was the weakest episode in the whole series but so much shit goes on, it ain't no thang.
season 2 - honestly i liked this the least, i fucking hated ziggy, frank is the man.
season 3 - i got lost a lil here and there and definately had to review some scenes over but it's worth it cause there are so many lil twists in this one it's hard not to be lost, maybe it's cause i took a month off between episdoes or something. this is when the show gets fucking compelling, in a IRL kinda way, yah know what I mean? OMAR SON.
season 4 - probably my favorite season in the history of television. being utterly dynamic on so many levels now that the public schools come into play. i still think snoop is a dude.
season 5 - gus was probably one of the most interesting characters in the show and it was kinda shitty we didn't see more of him, however it's a nice compliment and balance to the weird storyline, presented by the reporter and mcnulty. what's the moral? how long can you live a lie? abuse of power? seemed to be a common theme for every character this season.
random thoughts
jimmy mcnulty is fucking english, wtf
the red headed DA had one of the best makeovers in the history of tv
leo fitzpatrick takes some of the most fucked roles ever, YES.
One thing I noticed is that now you know what all the characters are about, season 1 isn't nearly as slow. The series has great re-watch potential. I think a lot of season 1 just went over my head the first time I saw it because I didn't really know what anybody was all about yet. It's very interesting to re-watch that shit now though.
PS: Stringer Bill is English too (spoiler in video):
i was watching something the other night and the guy who played clay davis was in it. as soon as i saw him, i went "SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-IIIT!"

Omar gon' GIT YOU!
i just downloaded the first episode of this...prob watching it sunday night. anygood?
It's got potential. Its high quality for sure. The acting and all the costumes are awesome. If you like any Scorsese stuff you will like this. Its very much his style.
Steve Buscemi rules but some of the acting / source material / period idiosyncrasies are fucking clownshoes. Like that old snark who's shacking up with the dishy young sozzle from Baltimore who wouldn't put out and had to be admonished into giving a (gloved albeit) handie. That whole perturbed, talking-out-the-side-of-your-mouth "shnawwwwwwwwww... seeee" charicature can suck my newfangled cock. Flat out gets my ass out. Gets me hoppin' mad. Kinda like Shirley Temple. I fuckin' HATE Shirley Temple. Turgid ginger cunt.
