the lugo deal is WAY worse. 9 mil/year, already 14 errors this season, and he hasn't hit a home run yet. drew's 07 was kind of an aberration, all his numbers were below his career averages. i'd chalk it up to switching leagues, getting adjusted to the boston media, and the sick son (not necessarily in that order). also, signing drew probably made it easier to sign matsuzaka, considering they're both boras clients.

oh yeah i in no way condone signing Lugo, and Gonzo is actually not only fielding but is hitting for the Reds so that was a top notch move for Theo.

now the question is, once ortiz comes back from his injury, does he go into the 3 slot? if drew's still hitting like this, i don't know if i could do that.

I'd say if it were anyone else but Ortiz, then you keep Drew there, but you have the perfect situation with Manny hitting behind Ortiz. I say you move Drew back to the 5 slot (where he was when he was originally signed), or maybe even move him to the 2 and move Pedroia down to 7 behind Youk. I think J.D. would be GREAT at the 2. With Ortiz behind him, he'd see A TON of fastballs.

drew at 2 does seem like an interesting idea, especially considering pedroia's low obp. but we also have to consider the notion that ortiz might need some time to get his swing back once he starts playing again. if drew is still locked in, i'd say keep him at 3 for a week or so, then do some lineup shuffling.

Interesting point. I could see that happening. The more I think of it, once Ortiz comes back at full strength again, moving him to 2 would be better, and if Drew starts to fall off again, just put the lineup back to normal with Drew at the 6 or 7 and Pedroia at the 2.
