The Black Lips are what you could call true visionaries of a skeptical age. It's a dazzling catastrophe that needs to be absorbed before it vaporizes into thin air. The fun these guys have is hard to hide either live or on record. Seriously slurred swashbucklers living out the ultimate teenage dream, yet breaking through another layer of remarkable idiocy, transcribed through hallucinations, exasperation, and perfectly casual dick fumbling. Such perennial sophistication causes the very foundation of "FLOWER PUNK" to be lysergisized, germinated, fertilized, and fully pollenated. Let it Bloom, and it's fruit, will feed the next generation of off-centered, slop-a-licious rock'n roll pioneers for years to come. How the Black Lips manage to walk through the perfumed garden of life is a miracle of modern bullshit, but a miracle nonetheless. Their validity is overwhelming and so refreshing, it almost makes me dizzy, and the way they can find their way through the mundane darkness of modern music and discover their own notes and chords between the lines is unparalleled by their peers. Their substance is real, their new album is prerequisite, and their message is disturbingly clear. Rock'n Roll is soul-stirringly powerful and unpredictable, and there's nothing more important than that. It's not everyday that a band can exorcize such an atrociously beautiful THIRD album, so it may be hard for you to grasp, like the rest of us. These boys have tapped into a very secret well that everyone wants to drink from. Too bad it's got weird bent rainbows and chunks of shit floating in it.

Sure, LEVIATHAN is grimmer than grim metal that the frost & forest lords of Norway should bow down to, but it's also pure expression unfettered by genre restraints, although informed and inspired by them. Like Weakling, Mistigo Varggoth Darkestra, Caacrinolas, Potentiam, Enslaved, and other of the more unique and category-defying black metal bands, this is not just one for fans of black metal! It's dark, weird, noisy, disturbing art embodying one man's twisted vision, that should be heard by anyone into avantgarde, experimental, psycically and physically powerful rock music. From blasting howling fury to moody ambient blackness to off kilter weirdness to droning riffery to soul crushing heaviness. What's truly remarkable is that one man, playing all the instruments himself, and recording at home, can evoke such strong emotions and invoke such musical demons. Original, evil, hateful, misanthropic, bizarre and truly black metal... For "Verräter", the first official LEVIATHAN release, we went through the 13 full length self-released cassettes and cd-r's Leviathan had recorded since 1998 (as of today that number has already leapt to 15!) to try and compile a good overview, but we couldn't quite whittle it down enough so one disc, thankfully became two (we were even batting around the idea of a box set!) with the first disc representing the more recently recorded stuff, while disc two contains the older, raw-er material.

This is a 24 track compilation compiled by J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) featuring all the recorded material from his first band ‘Deep Wound’. Deep Wound were formed in 1982. Deep Wound were a hardcore punk band from western Massachusetts. They released one self-titled EP on Radiobeat Records in 1983. They had 2 tracks on the ‘Bands That Could Be God’ compilation in 1984. "Vicious Circle" is one of the most sadly-ignored records from the early 80's. The Zero Boys never got the attention that their indie counterparts Toxic Reasons did but the first single ("Livin' In The 80's", also re-released on Oct. 10th and available through Lookout/Panic Button) and this album was one of the most effective at straddling early 80's hardcore and the pop sensibilities of many of the late '70's punk bands, and it's one of a handful of truly classic punk records from thjat time that doesn't sound dated. Between Paul Mahern's "I-Don't-Give-A-Shit" Iggy vocal sneer to the blazing bass lines of Tufty, this album inspired plenty of midwestern punks (mostly upon its re-release by Toxic Shock in the late 80's) and proved you don't have to live near an ocean to make valid punk music. As the extensive line notes from Jack Rabid note, the album is exactly as originally released (art, masters) with the exception of two bonus tracks which were originally slated for the album but ultimately left off due to a suggestion from Jello Biafra that they were too "pop." The re-issue of this album has been a labor of love for John and I at Panic Button (and to a degree, Mass Giorgini, who was instrumental in helping to convince Paul Mahern that it should be re-released) and we're extremely proud to be associated with the record and to pick up where Toxic Shock left off in bringing it to a new generation.
