Haven't listened to FBD in a while, just put it in while working on a lab at my desk tonight. All I can say is damn. I forgot how amazing this record was.

actually the death of Dimebag did a great thing, since the shooting Phil has decided to put off the next SuperJoint Ritual. freeing up time for Jimmy Bower to do EYEHATEGOD again.

I love em both. People always make comparisons but I see them as having very distinct styles: Exhorder is an amazing old school thrash band.
Pantera's 'Cowboys' CD was in a kind of classic power/thrash vein, but everything after that was uniquely PANTERA. It's a sound that's hard to categorize except by saying "it sounds like Pantera."
Dimebag is (was) a much, much better guitarist than either of the guys from Exhorder, although I think the Exhorder guys wrote cooler thrash riffs for the most part.
Phil is an excellent and very unique vocalist who is imitated by many. But in terms of straight-up THRASH vocals, Kyle Thomas of Exhorder has Phil Anselmo beat easily. |

Pantera and this record in particular suck. Mallmetal with some whiny meathead complaining about not being understood. Darrell was a good guitar player, but it was tuff-guy rawk, eh dood? If Pantera was an instrumental band they wouldn't have been half as bad. Anselmo is such a pussy-boy. |

Pantera was/is awesome.
Dime was one of the most original, influencial and dominating guitar players of our time. He was our Randy Rhoads or EVH. He did things with a guitar that no one else could've dreamed. Vinnie Pauls and Rex Brown were one of the most solid Rhythm sections ever while still managing to not be just the back up behind the leads. And say what you will about Phil but his voice is more imitated than anyone else I can think of, and now one else can do his style right.
If you dont like them, cool, but you've got to give credit were its do. While most of there peers where getting soft in the 90's they were getting harder, darker and heavier and they thrived doing it.

Power Metal is my favorite Pantera album. And I'm not trying to be ironic or funny, I really like that album. It's a total kick-ass power metal album (the 80's definition of power metal, not the Lord of the Rings crap that gets called power metal nowadays).

people think pantera started mall metal?? I don't get it. If your that pissed off about mall metal, write some metal and show em how it's done. I know quite a few great bands that wouldn't exist w/o Pantera.
Dime's murder will never be used for something as gay as the return of Eyehategod. I don't think you would have even heard of Eyehategod w/o Pantera. |

im completely lost on how pantera sucks. im not saying they are the greatest band of the 90s or some gay shit. but pantera doesnt suck. they have an incredibly retarded following, but oh well. i dont take the fans or politics of a band into consideration when listening to them.
but then again, a large amount of people who post here used to be hardcore kids who would endlessly make fun of king diamond but now that they are brutal metalheads they think hes awesome. whatever. |
