not entirely true, though believable in some capacity. I had a VGN series for 3 years which took constant abuse, had a great keyboard, and was incredibly serviceable (keyboard popped out by depressing a tab with a screwdriver). thing still functions as my office media center driving a 42" TV and I miss that damn keyboard for coding, it had superior action.

that unit replaced a PCG-505 series which was far ahead of it's time, thinner than most netbooks today, with a magnesium-alloy case and ran slackware like a dream.

today I just picked up a NWZ-S545 16GB mp3 player which is miles above comparably priced iriver and rover products, with amazing sound quality and awesome video playback.

a few months ago I set up one of their full-powered subnotebooks for a friend and was amazed at what was packed in that tiny little box.

I do agree, like many brands, they are pretty hit or miss, and sometimes as a company they are a piece of shit (re: rootkit install, memory stick, battery issues). I wouldn't go so far to say it's consistently been garbage, though.
