When you're surrounded by musicians of that calibur you've got to at least know the basics. Given he's a percussionist though, I'd say the chances of him reading it as well as Gillespie or others, is quite slim. Jazz is more about the free flowing progression of theory anyway. Unless parts are specifically composed, they aren't reading music as it is mostly improv. Jazz is incredible to watch, especially of you catch the same wave as the people playing the music.
