While I agree with you, for the type of music that Nacrophagist writes, the dude does EXACTLY what is called for.

THAT, IMO, makes him a great drummer.... for the type of music they do.

The real test would be to see if he could hang with a less "techy", more groove-oriented band.

For instance... John Longstreth in Origin = fairly impressive. good fit. John Longstreth swith Skinless = no soul, no groove, over playing, too fast, not a good fit.

What impresses me most about guys like this, is that they don't hit as hard as most metal drummers, but they hit consistently and they hit properly so that the drums sound big regardless. That's just good technique. Some drummer put more emphasis on that aspect of their playing, which in some cases results in a less exciting sound, but more proficient playing.
