Are you talking a real major like Epic or just a big "indie" like Metal Blade. That makes a huge difference. But regardless, nowadays many bands get into a 7 album contract, so 5 really isn't all that bad. Keep in mind, the more money the label spends on you, the more records you have to sell. (and believe me, every single penny a label spends to produce and promote your album is recupable from your royalties, even the postage used to send out promo materials to retail and radio) Albini's figures are accurate, BUT what if said band had sold a million copies? They would've made out pretty good. Take my old band for example. Label spent the bare minimum on promotion, we had a small recording budget, and other than plane tix to go overseas, zero tour support. But this worked to our advantage. By the time we left the label after album #5, we were completely in the black. It's been 8 years since we parted ways and we still get a royalty check every year. Nothng to quit my job over, but it throws one Hell of a fucking party. But, for band like you are talking about, bands like that rarely get to quit their day jobs, you'd be surprised at what bands metalheads assume are "huge" that have to drive taxis or whatever when they're not on the road. So, the main point of signing to a label should be just to get your music out there. If you're in this for the money, you are playing the wrong style of music.
