Exactly. The promo tracks were pretty weak, the other tracks are much better, but still nowhere near exciting as their 80s stint (up to Seasons).

I think this is as exciting as the 80's...let's face it they're 40+ now. To be writing this kind of material 20+years later and still be coherent to thrash metal is impressive and STILL blows away 95% of other stuff out there. They'll never recapture Hell Awaits or Reign in Blood, we know that...but they do too. I think this needs to be checked out again before they are judged and sentenced as I think it's the best cd since Seasons...really if you listen closely, it's not that far from that disc

I can't agree, there are other bands who are 40 years old now and have continued to evolve their songwriting and still put out great records, some of which eclipse their old material. I mean, fuck, the new Motorhead album is perfection! But I don't think this Slayer disc is even remotely impressive.

Better than anything since Seasons in the Abyss? Possibly. But that's not saying much. This definitely doesn't blow away 95% of other metal releases though. There are some solid thrash songs on this disc, but it's really just going through the motions. Not one of these songs says to me "I have to hear that one again right now!" I can name probably 100 records this year I like better. And I'm not kidding. Of course that's me, and I listen to most metal genres without prejudice (apart from the obvious), but I'm just saying. That should never be the case with Slayer. Slayer used to put out album after album that was fresh, evil, and original. This just sounds tired to me.

Now, even though I'm the devil's advocate here, I don't hate the album, I thought it would be much worse after hearing the promo tracks. But everything about it to me is 'meh'.
