I would go with rooster's plan, except I would fill the holes with alphetic resin (yellow wood glue) first.

The resin melts the wood on a molecular level, and if done correctly forms a wood bond stronger than the original natural bond. I've done this operation on many guitars and it works well.

any resin glue will do, but I use elmers outdoor yellow wood/carpenter's glue (as does ken patin of yavcon guitars and Neal Moser of MCS).

If you go with arrowhead's method, it will work just as well but make sure you get a dowel that isn't treated. chemicals in pressured/treated woods can react with your guitar's finish and turn green like copper.
